In Nike’s eyes, sport can breed “radical inclusivity” thanks to the diverse backgrounds, stories, and orientations of those who comprise it. And with their 2021 “Be True” collection, the brand is vocalizing this in tangible forms — specifically, through the Blazer ’77 Low, Air Max Pre Day, All Out Utility Slide, and Infinity React Run 2.
While distinct in choice of design and palette, all four options join hands in the same purpose: to express the value of “diverse representation.” Alongside hits of energetic color and Pride Flag markings, each comes equipped with 9 velcro patches that explore the flags of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum.
Additionally, Nike joins Gia Parr in conversation. A face of the Human Rights Campaign’s Youth Ambassador program, Parr shares her experience transitioning from male-to-female in middle school three years ago. “I came out to my parents first, and from there, I slowly came out to other people,” Parr stated. “I came out to my best friend at the mall, which is so random — it’s the little things. Then I remember coming out to my mom’s smaller family on vacation, and then my dad’s family at a reunion, which was, like, a hundred people. I’d say it was a build-up to me coming out to my entire school and pretty much my whole town.”
To hear what else Parr had to share, head over to Nike News for the full story. The 2021 Be True collection will be available June 7th in North America before releasing globally on June 15th through Nike.com.
