During 2018, Nike’s “On Air” initiative gave creative-minded residents of the world’s foremost cities an opportunity to create special sneakers inspired by their communities and culture. From New York’s Air Max 98 “La Mezcla” to Shanghai’s Air Max 97 “Shanghai Kaleidoscope,” defining characteristics of major metropolises the globe over were condensed into shoe form — and Tokyo’s Yuta Takuman oped to nod to her home city with a special take on the timeless Air Max 1, the first-ever sneaker to feature a visible Air cushioning unit.
Dubbed the “Tokyo Maze,” Takuman’s design is inspired by the seemingly endless multitudes of bright-colored tube lines that criss-cross anad zig-zag between the city, moving commuters to and fro with astounding efficiency. The upper is awash in embossed patterns: the left foot opts for a white base with black accents, while the right foot flips the script by using black as a base and white as the accenting color. Each shoe also features a corresponding-colored tongue complete with a special badge. The design is then brought together by rainbow-colored laces, white midfoot Swooshes, red heel branding, and a black midsole with a red Air bubble that acknowledges the iconic Tokyo Tower. Expect these AM1s to roll out this spring/summer alongside the other silhouettes from the pack, check out images below, and stay tuned to our Sneaker Release Dates page for specific drop information as it’s available.
